A New York Police Department officer has punched a 12-year-old black boy who was being handcuffed by four other officers.
A footage has been released showing the young African American surrounded by officers when another cop arrived and struck the boy repeatedly.
The young boy was arrested in Manhattan’s Lower East Side with two others for allegedly assaulting somebody with a cane. A second 12-year-old boy was also handcuffed.
The video shows that the other officers move to allow the cop, who appears to be a plain-clothed officer, to get close to the black boy.
The incident happened on Monday and was caught on a cellphone camera by actress Sarah Doneghy.
Doneghy said on Youtube that the kids “had supposedly pushed one of their classmates down,” but noted that the victim himself said “those weren’t the guys.”
New York police department’s internal affairs bureau is currently investigating the incident.
New York City as well as other cities and towns in the United States have been the scene of protests for weeks over police brutality against African Americans in the US.
Protests have been held in New York City over the case of Eric Garner, who was placed in an apparent chokehold on July 17 by officer Daniel Pantaleo. However, a grand jury did not indict Pantaleo.
Similar demonstrations have been held in other cities over grand juries’ failure to indict other officers who killed three other unarmed black people, including Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin.
