US condemns recent law against demonstrations in Egypt

Egyptian protestors being arrestedOn Friday the US Administration expressed concern about the latest protest law that puts severe restrictions on demonstrations in Egypt.

More than 200 Egyptians have been recently detained in accordance with this law, while thousands all over Egypt were crushed and violently dispersed.

US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki described the bill as contradicting international criteria.

Psaki added: “We reiterate the concerns we share with civil society representatives inside Egypt that the protest law is restrictive and does not meet international standards.”

She also said that the Egyptian authorities used tear gas and water cannons to disperse “peaceful demonstrators” and detained many Egyptians.

She said: “Authorities beat a number of those demonstrators and released them in the heart of the desert. Peaceful demonstrators have the right to express their opinions.”

Explaining how this law contradicts international criteria, she said: “Limiting freedom of assembly, association, and expression will not move Egypt’s political transition forward.”
