US budget cuts trigger blame game

White House itemization on Friday of what is referred to as the “sequestration” plan points to potentially agonizing budgetary shortfalls in many programs such as Medicare healthcare for the elderly, military purchases and agricultural aid packages that support farmers.

The budget cuts would also include the slashing of USD 129 million in embassy security, which comes in light of growing protests and attacks against American diplomatic posts throughout the Muslim world, particularly in the Middle East, Africa and Afghanistan in response to a US-made anti-Islamic video, insulting Islam’s highly revered prophet.

The reductions, intended to lower the persistently growing US budget deficits, would reportedly lead to a 9.4 percent cut in military procurement programs and an 8.2 percent cut in a series of domestic government public program, according to administration officials.

The so-called sequestration is the outcome of the failure of Congress and the administration to reach agreement on a long-term deficit reduction package.

The wide reductions are part of what US economists have referred to as a “fiscal cliff” scenario that may throw the country into another recession. Expiring tax cuts are reportedly the other side of the cliff.

US Republicans have focused most of their harsh criticism of the Obama administration on the military cuts, using the issue in the campaign to blame the American president for undermining national security.
