‘US bad policy makes Taliban stronger’

Press TV has interviewed Allen Roland, online columnist and political commentator from Sonoma California discussing the contradictory statements. What follows is an approximate transcript of the interview.

Press TV: First of all, the contradictory claims being made regarding the momentum of the Taliban, there is no doubt that the US-led forces are grappling with insurgency in Afghanistan. So, is the Obama administration in denial, or was he simply campaigning?

Roland: Two things will answer your question and once again thank you for having me on Press TV: one – Obama is in denial: two – this is an election. The last thing Obama wants to see is this Afghanistan thing fall on his face.

So you have to take an objective view of what is happening – the truth of the matter is this: The Taliban are really freedom fighters. They’re getting stronger because we are bombing them; night raids; everything is continuing and quite honestly they’re getting stronger because we’ve oppressed them for so long.

Remember, we are an occupying force over there. These people are being unjustly oppressed by the US and the West; they have every right to fight back.

So, Obama is talking through his head and he’s only saying this because he wants to maintain that he is on the positive side going into election. He is losing big-time credibility; the majority of American people do not want us there and only the military industrial complex does.

This is a face-saving measure by Obama and it’s not working.

Press TV: With the US trying to get the Taliban back to the negotiating table and even offering a safe passage through Pakistan, the US mission sounds more skewed in Afghanistan. Are the Taliban the enemy or not?

Roland: The Taliban? How can we call freedom fighters the enemy? First of all, we have a government in Afghanistan that is totally corrupt and which we put into place. So you can see how ridiculous this whole thing is. We’ve got an illegal government that we put into place… and supposedly we’re having talks with the Taliban, the freedom fighters? Come on!

This is all a stall tactic so Obama can get through the election and somehow maintain that he’s making progress – we are not. There’s a quagmire of the Empire for a reason. It’s a quagmire of the American Empire.

Press TV: Also then, this raises the question of how success is measured in this war. If the enemy is arbitrary, can the gains made be even call a success?

Roland: Remember… Who are you calling the enemy? As far as I’m concerned the enemy is us? We have gone in there and oppressed these people in an illegal war. They are not the enemy, we are the enemy. Let’s get that straight. The rest of the world knows it; you should know it, too. We’re the enemy and we’re trying to somehow stay safe. The majority of American soldiers there do not want to be there, they want to be back here.

This is a Kabooki Theater operation somehow trying to maintain the image that we’re making progress when quite honestly we’re desperately trying to find a way out and save face, very much like Vietnam.
