‘US, Arabs back anti-Syria terror’

Syrian state newspapers said on Sunday that the methods and choices of targets in terror attacks across the country testified to al-Qaeda’s involvement.

The newspapers said that the al-Qaeda-led terrorism was being backed by Washington and bankrolled by some Arab countries.

“Washington has a history of supporting terrorism” and “this is being repeated in Syria…where terrorist groups are being funded by some Arab countries and supported by the West,” one editorial read.

Meanwhile, armed gang ‘Al-Nusrah Front’ has claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing that rocked Damascus on Friday.

The blast occurred near a mosque and school in the al-Midan neighborhood in the central part of the capital when a terrorist detonated the explosives he was carrying, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens of others.

Since the beginning of the unrest in the country last year, scores of people, mostly security forces, have been killed in bombings and other terrorist attacks.

There has been no abatement in the violence, despite a UN-brokered ceasefire, which is part of a peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
