“We’re going to continue to press forward in the [UN] Security Council. We’re going to continue to press the Russians…I believe – and I’ve said it before and obviously I can’t put a timeline on it – that this [Syrian] regime cannot survive,” said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during a Monday press conference in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
The comments came while, earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his opposition to foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs, highlighting that the West has been trying to blackmail Moscow into accepting a military intervention in Syria.
Lavrov said the Western threats of discontinuing the UN unarmed observer mission to Syria if Russia does not agree to allow the West to use force in the Middle Eastern country amounts to blackmail.
“We will not be able to allow passage of a Security Council resolution that is not based on the Geneva agreements,” he said. The top Russian diplomat made the comments ahead of a meeting with UN-Arab League envoy for Syria Kofi Annan, scheduled for later in the day.
Moscow says any potential change in the Syrian power structure must be achieved through negotiation.
The Security Council is debating a new resolution on Syria, occasioned by the expected expiration on July 20 of the mandate for the UN observer mission.
Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, including many security forces.
Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the violence, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
