‘US Afghan stay against public opinion’

President Barack Obama “is keeping troops there against public opinion and American troops are paying the price for it,” James Morris, an American journalist and political commentator, said in an interview with Press TV’s US Desk on Thursday.

Describing the US-led Afghan war “an unbearable situation” for the United States, he added that Obama refuses to pull military forces out of Afghanistan in order to save face and avoid being called a loser.

The reason why President Obama is still “keeping the US troops there in another quagmire is that he does not want to be the US president on record to lose Afghanistan,” Morris noted.

Meanwhile, according to an ABC News poll conducted by telephone between April 5 and 8, an overwhelming majority of Americans are against Afghan war and want a withdrawal of US forces from the Asian country.

The survey has found that six in 10 Americans believe most Afghans themselves oppose the US occupation.

Official figures released by the website icasualties.org also show that more than 1930 American soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since October 2001, when the US-led invasion of the country occured.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of thousands of US-led soldiers in the conflict-plagued country.

The United Nations announced on February 4 that the year 2011 was the deadliest on record for Afghan civilians. Overall, 3,021 civilians died in violence related to the war and 4,507 were wounded in 2011.
