US: Afghan deal ‘ought to be signed’

The administration of President Barack Obama has said that a security deal it is seeking to sign with the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai “ought to be signed.”

Despite pressures from Washington, Karzai has so far refused to sign the bilateral security deal which could allow thousands of US troops to stay in Afghanistan for up to a decade beyond 2014.

“This was an agreement negotiated with the Afghan government, in good faith, over a long period of time. And it ought to be signed. We’re not renegotiating it,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney on Wednesday.

Carney’s comments came one day after US National Intelligence Director James Clapper said before the Senate Armed Services Committee that he did not believe Karzai would sign the deal.

Clapper also indicated that it would be better for Washington to wait until after Afghanistan’s presidential elections in April, hoping a new Afghan president might sign the deal.

According to Reuters, the US wants to keep 10,000 troops in Afghanistan after the December 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of US-led forces out of the country.

Washington has repeatedly threatened the Afghan government that it would pull all its troops out of Afghanistan if the security deal is not signed.

The US government had issued an ultimatum that the agreement must be signed by the end of December but it extended the deadline to January. While the deal has not yet been signed, the White House continues to threaten the Afghan government that the US would pull all of its troops out unless the agreement is signed soon.

In a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday, Joe Iosbaker, a leader of the United National Antiwar Coalition, said “the US is losing the war” in Afghanistan as Karzai “has been compelled by Afghan public opinion to refuse” to sign the security agreement.
