The commander of the US Pacific Command has been appointed an honorary officer in the military division of the Order of Australia (AO).
Admiral Robert Willard of the US Navy was awarded his honorary AO for distinguished service to the military relationship between Australia and his nation as commander, US Pacific Command, the official secretary to the governor-general Stephen Brady said in a statement on Wednesday.
Mr Brady said Australia’s alliance with the US had strengthened considerably, contributing to Australia’s security and interest in the Asia-Pacific, and benefiting regional neighbours through co-operative security relationships during Admiral Willard’s tenure.
“Admiral Willard has championed the primacy of the Asia-Pacific region in the coming century, consistently advocating deeper and more expansive ties with Australia, and playing a vital role in achieving agreement on bilateral force posture initiatives,” Mr Brady said in a statement on Wednesday.
