US academic suffers suspicious death

The police in Maryland shackled Patrick Raphael Toney on Friday and sent him to hospital with a hood over his head. They said the 41-year-old was acting strangely near his parked car at an intersection when he was arrested.

On the way to the hospital, the academic stopped breathing, but medics managed to revive him. On Wednesday, the hospital notified the police of his death.

He was arrested on April 12 on child abuse charges and released on bail just hours before being rearrested on Friday.

In an interview with Press TV on April 16, Malcolm X’s grandson El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz said, “There are hundreds of black Americans, who are being murdered in the United States every year with impunity. And police officers serve no time. They always get off.”

He was commenting on the fatal shooting in Florida in February of unarmed African American 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

The issue of hate crimes is one of the most controversial topics in the Unites States and has, in the recent weeks, sparked a number of demonstrations across the country.

Martin’s murder, which took place in Sanford, Florida on February 26, has rekindled concerns over the matter among the US public. Many have questioned the motives behind the killing, saying the shooting was racially motivated.

Shabazz said the killings were taking place as a result of institutionalized racism in the country.
