UNSC urges order in Mali

“The Security Council strongly condemns the continued attacks, looting, and seizure of territory carried out by rebel groups in the north of Mali and demands an immediate cessation of hostilities,” the UNSC said in a statement on Wednesday, the state-run BBC reported.

The council also expressed support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a 15-nation regional bloc, which is making efforts to restore order in Mali.

On March 22, mutinous Malian soldiers led by coup leader, Captain Amadou Sanogo, toppled Mali’s President Amadou Toumani Toure and took control of government institutions.

The leaders of the movement said they had mounted the coup out of anger at the government’s inability to contain a two-month-old rebellion in the north of the country.

France had called an emergency meeting of the Security Council to discuss the situation in the West African country nearly two weeks after the coup.

In addition, the council voiced concern at the presence of al-Qaeda-linked militants in the country.

The council’s statement called on the coup leader to ensure the security of all Malian officials.

Also on Wednesday, Liberia promised to support the restoration of constitutional order in Mali, but said it would not dispatch troops for this purpose.

“The government of Liberia will stand by the Malians in making sure that the rule of democracy is restored,” said Malian Minister of State Conmany Wesseh.

“We cannot send troops because our Army is being reformed, but we serve in other capacities like intelligence and sharing our experience in dealing with such issues,” he added.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has been involved in talks with other members of ECOWAS, which has slapped diplomatic, financial, and economic embargo on Mali’s junta.

Meanwhile, the military rulers postponed a national conference on the country’s political future.

The junta “informs the national and international community that the national convention, which was initially to be held on Thursday has been postponed,” said a statement signed by junta spokesman, Lieutenant Amadou Konare. A new date is yet to be announced.
