Days of Palestine, West Bank -A Palestinian watchdog said on Friday that Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists reached “unprecedented” rate in 2015.
The Palestinian Centre for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) recorded a total of 599 violations against media freedoms throughout 2015.
MADA’s General Director Moussa Rimawi said: “This is the highest ever to be monitored in Palestine since it started monitoring violations against media freedoms around a decade ago.”
The report said 2015 had seen 134 more violations against Palestinian journalists compared to previous year; an increase of 29 percent.
However, it noted that that 2014 witnessed the “worst and widest violations,” including the deaths of 17 journalists during the 51-day Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip that led to the death of more than 2,260 Palestinians, wounded around 11,000 others and displaced more than half a million.
According to the report, the majority of 2015’s violations, 407 incidents, were committed by the Israeli forces, while 192 violations were committed by “various Palestinian bodies, mainly the Palestinian Authority security services in the occupied West Bank.”
The report found that half the Israeli violations were concentrated in the final three months of 2015, after the start of the ongoing intifada in protest against the continuous Israeli violations against the Palestinians and their holy sites, including Al-Aqsa Mosque.
