Unions warn of UK govt. police sale

Warning that the police privatization is “truly frightening” with the message of “Policing Not for Sale”, the unions estimated that if all forces joined in the contract being advertised by West Midlands and Surrey Police to run police services, it would place 25% of total police funding into private hands in England and Wales.

The police privatization plans were discussed at a conference in London today between the police and private sector business representatives.

A few days ago, two of the UK’s largest police forces, West Midlands and Surrey, invited major private firms to take control of a broad range of services including investigating crime, monitoring neighborhoods and holding suspected criminals, which were formerly conducted by the police.

The privatization contract is regarded as the largest in police force, with a value of £1.5 billion for seven years, which would increase to £3.5 billion if other forces also got involved.

“People in the West Midlands and Surrey have not had any say in these plans and yet their safety and confidence in the police will be severely jeopardized if this contract goes ahead,” said Unison national officer for police staff Ben Priestley.

“There is a real danger that creeping privatization under this government will see private companies running the whole of our justice system – from the police to courts, to prisons and probation.”

Furthermore, Unite national organizer for the services sector Peter Allenson emphasized the need for creating “ a coalition of resistance” in order “to stop the government from dismantling our police service.”

Police Federation of England and Wales vice-chairman Simon Reed also warned that the police privatization would have “catastrophic consequences” for police accountability and service to the public.
