Union boss quizzed over Katter support

A Victorian union secretary faces internal discipline over his support for Katter’s Australian Party ahead of the Queensland election.

The Electrical Trades Union’s (ETU) Victorian secretary, Dean Mighell, appeared in support of the federal MP’s new conservative party at its national convention on the weekend.

It’s understood funds from the Victorian ETU branch were also donated to Bob Katter last year before his party was formed.

The ETU’s national secretary, Peter Tighe, says Mr Mighell may have breached union rules by backing Mr Katter’s party without the approval of the Queensland ETU branch, which supports Labor.

Mr Mighell has been asked to explain his actions and faces internal charges if his explanation is not satisfactory, Mr Tighe said.

“Dean has certainly not raised the issue or had the support of the Queensland branch of our electrical division,” he said.

“He has got every right to act as an individual but as soon as he uses his title and our organisation and indicates he’s speaking on behalf of the ETU, regardless of what branch, it gives it a different light.”

Mr Mighell said he was speaking on his own behalf, and not the ETU’s, at the Katter’s Australian Party convention.

The union’s Victorian branch had voted to donate funds to then independent MP Bob Katter last year as was its right, Mr Mighell said.

The union secretary said he was mystified as to why the ETU’s Queensland branch would want to support Labor when the party planned to privatise the electricity industry and shed thousands of its members’ jobs.

“How the union in Queensland can remain affiliated to a political party that is hell bent on destroying the Queensland electricity industry and throwing its members’ jobs and families on the scrapheap, I cannot possibly fathom,” he said.

Katter’s Australian Party state leader Aidan McLindon called Mr Mighell a “fearless representative for his members”.
