Hanan Fayed (TCP) : Arab foreign ministers adopted a statement drafted by Egypt and Palestine on clashes at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem that demands the Security Council to end Israeli practices that “aim to alter the situation on the ground” and undermine the possibility of negotiations, Youm7 reported Monday.
The option pf resuming the tenth emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the table, according to the statement which was discussed by the ministers on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abou Zeid told reporters.
Violence erupts during Jewish holidays
Early Monday, Israeli police took to the roof of the Qibli Mosque inside the compound of Al-Aqsa amid clashes between them and Palestinians, with the police using stun grenades and tear gas and Palestinians hurling rocks, Sky News Arabia reported.
The bombs used by the police shattered several ancient windows of the Qibli Mosque and led to a fire, head of the Jerusalem Endowment Council Abdel Azim Sahlab told Sky News Arabia, adding that Israel wants to “pull the rug from under the Endowment as a prelude to the Judaization process and voiding the Jordanian custodianship” over the holy site.
Israeli police say that Palestinians refuse to allow Jewish visitors into the site, hence confining Palestinians to the inside of the mosque, Haaretz reported. On many occasions, the Israeli authorities only allow Muslim men over 50 to enter the holy sanctuary, such as on Sunday.
Ten Palestinian have been injured in the clashes, some of whom are in critical conditions, especially that the Israeli police prevented them from exiting the mosque to receive first aid, and did not let medical workers inside, according to Sky News.
The clashes have been on and off in the past couple of weeks as Jews celebrate a number of their holidays, which are often accompanied by threats from radical Jews to storm Al-Aqsa plaza.
The Israeli police had already broken down historical gates and windows of the Qibli Mosque two weeks ago, as well as dozens of windows of Al-Aqsa Mosque and burned its carpet in 12 spots on Sept. 13, Reuters quoted the mosques official Radwan Amr.
Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan have denounced the Israeli raids in strong terms.
