UNESCO to assess Iran carpet washing

The file, which is based on the ritual of carpet washing in Mashhad-e Ardehal near Iranian historical city of Kashan has been newly offered by Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO).

The file is slated to be examined during the 7th session of the UNESCO’s committee that will be held in Grenada from November 25 to 30, 2012, said director of CHTHO’s Office for Registration, Preservation and Restoration of Intangible Cultural and Natural Heritage, Atousa Momeni.

The ritual, which is held annually on the second Friday of autumn by the young men of the region, is said to symbolize the funeral ceremony of a descendant of Shia’s Imam Muhammad Baqir (PBUH) named ‘Imamzadeh Soltan Ali’ in Mashhad Ardehal in 732 CE.

Mashhad Ardehal is a village known for the burial site of Sultan Ali as well as the notable modern Persian poet and painter Sohrab Sepehri and the traditional, religious and historical mourning ceremony of carpet washing.

To perform the ritual that annually attracts thousands of people to Mashhad Ardehal, young men gather at the shrine where its large carpet is wrapped in green textile and delivered to them.

Thereafter the young men take the carpet to wash it in a nearby spring while they whirl sticks in the air that symbolize the clubs (used as weapons centuries ago) and recite religious poems.

Persian Passion Play (Ta’zieh), the Pahlevani and Zurkhaneh sports, the traditional skills of carpet weaving in the Fars region and the traditional skills of carpet weaving in Kashan are some of the Iranian items that were registered on the UNESCO list in November 2010.

The Persian New Year or Nowruz and the Iranian classical music are some other events and art forms inscribed on the list.
