Unelected men are overseeing a culture of intimidation in the Liberal National Party (LNP), acting Queensland premier Andrew Fraser says.
The LNP is embroiled in a new crisis after the Queensland opposition party’s treasurer was caught on tape intimidating and hurling expletives at a candidate.
LNP treasurer Barry O’Sullivan was secretly taped questioning businessman Paul Freebody in March, after a complaint was made about the then-Cairns LNP candidate over a soured business deal.
During the interview he tells Mr Freebody: “You wouldn’t be the first f***ing dead body on the floor of this party where the problem has got too big.”
The president of Queensland’s opposition party Bruce McIver admits the grilling was over the top, but insists there’s no culture of intimidation in the LNP.
At one stage Mr Freebody is told he’s like “lifting a dead body” and is ordered to hold his hands in the air and repeat statements after Mr O’Sullivan like a naughty school boy.
Mr Fraser said the tape showed there was a toxic culture of intimidation being fostered by backroom people in the LNP.
“I think many people know this sort of politics that has been brought to Queensland in recent times, the sort of poison politics,” he told reporters in Brisbane.
“(It) raises big questions about the nature of what’s going on inside the organisation and who exactly is running the show.”
It wasn’t the first time, he continued, that the “strong-arm” tactics of LNP bosses had been revealed.
The latest revelations raised questions about the culture of the party and what an LNP government would look like.
“Ultimately there is a test here for (LNP leader) Campbell Newman … I think that we’ve got to send a message to the LNP that it is not a thug-ocracy,” Mr Fraser said.
LNP treasury spokesman Tim Nicholls said he was surprised by the tone of the interview and believed it had gone too far.
But he said it was good politics for the LNP to properly screen candidates to ward off future Labor attacks.
“I think it needs to be done in a commonsense way and with a degree of civility, it is not an unrobust process, you still need to make sure people are telling the truth,” he told ABC Radio.
“I think what we saw today was over the top and unwarranted.”
