UN urges P5+1 to end wordplay on Iran

The UN secretary general believes that some of the permanent member states of the Security Council should put an end to the useless wordplays with regards to Iran’s nuclear program and facilitate efforts to resume talks over the issue, a Ban spokesman said on Wednesday.

He reiterated Ban’s call for “serious and constructive dialogues” between Iran and the P5+1(Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany) and expressed optimism the talks would resume immediately.

Iran and the P5+1 held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010 and in the Turkish city of Istanbul in January 2011.

While Tehran has announced its readiness to continue the talks on common grounds, it has stressed that Iran will not relinquish its rights.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program, using this pretext to impose international and unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran’s civilian nuclear program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons production.

Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA. Hence, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
