UN postpones vote on Syria

The development came on Wednesday following a request by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan asking for a delay.

According to the diplomats, the vote is scheduled to be held on Thursday, while Moscow has pledged to veto any resolution which paves the way for a military intervention in Syria.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that a Western-backed resolution on the Arab state, “would amount to direct support” for the armed groups.

He further highlighted that the West provoked armed groups in Syria, noting that “Instead of calming the opposition down, some of our partners are inciting it to go on.”

Russia has repeatedly said that it opposes any military intervention in Syria. Instead, Moscow has drafted its own resolution that calls for all sides to stick to Annan’s six-point peace plan to end the unrest in Syria.

In April, Annan suggested a plan to put an end to the 16-month-long violence in Syria and set up a transition government acceptable to all sides. However, the armed groups in the country violated the plan.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
