‘UN observers must act honestly in Syria’

According to a UN spokesman, six observers have arrived in the capital, Damascus, and are scheduled to begin work on Monday.

The six observers are the first group of 30 monitors that have been approved for the mission.

The remaining 24 members of the group are expected to arrive in Damascus in the coming days.

The ceasefire was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League Kofi Annan in March.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Tawliq al-Jarrad, writer and political analyst, to share his opinion on this issue.

The following is a rough transcript of the interview.

Press TV: Sir, how confident should one be that the UN observers will be balanced and that secondly they won’t be ignored like the Arab League observers were?

Al-Jarrad: I think they should be considered under suspicion whether they are going to carry out their duty as well as usually be done.

Therefore when the first group of the team has arrived in Damascus last night, they should consider that they are going to have a talk with some security officers in Syria just to consider what are they going to do and with whom they are going to contact.

Has this discussion reported to be in a state of success I think they are going to carry out their duty as well.

Therefore, if they failed I think they have judged themselves that they are going to carry the country into face its doom day while they are planning to continue the struggle with the armed men against the Arab Syrian forces and at that time they are going to face the wall. Are they going to carry out such a probability or not?

I think the general atmosphere in the world within the light of Mr. Walid al-Muallem who is going to visit China I think it is today as well he has visited Moscow some previous days before; they are going to stable or to consider what role they are going to carry out if the UN monitors mission has failed.

I think so if they are going to carry out such a duty, an Arab League, I think they will face success and if they failed I think we are going to face something serious.

Anyhow, the United Nations monitors mission is not so far away from the main signals or the main points that have been pointed to when the Arab mission was carried out last September.

But the difference between the two teams, the first one, the Arab one, they thought that they are going to spy against the Syrian forces and to report some false reports as it was done by Anwar Malek to Al Jazeera space channel.

As for the second group, the United Nations group, I think they should promise that they are going to honor their duty and to honor their oaths or otherwise they will face the same channel.

Anyhow, the Syrian government is giving a chance to the armed people, to the armed men who have actively increased their–what I call–their terror in Syria until the people is convinced that they are facing a doom day otherwise they have to crush or to sign something contrary to their willing.

Press TV: How are things looking as far as Western intervention in Syrian affair goes as well as the reform process under way?

Al-Jarrad: I think it is something reported especially if we had to consider the procedures of such a step, we should go back to the mid of November 2010 when Lisbon in Portugal, the capital of Portugal, the NATO meeting [was] held and held at very deep discussions according to how they are going to control the Middle East and at that time they based what is considered as today as their main strategy.

Such strategies compose of two pillars. The first one is to control them, to control politically the area and then including that, including such a proposal is how to control the Middle East area within the face of a new world’s order going to be created up.

The second pillar is how to push the area to make conscience so as to sign a peaceful agreement as they say- to sign a peaceful agreement with Israel.

The neighbors of Israel have signed Camp David and the agreement of sovereignty in May 1983 with Lebanon. Therefore who has not signed remained Syria is not going to sign. How they are going to push Syria so as to carry out such an agreement?

Therefore they proposed that if Syria did not reply, did not accept such a proposal that had been carried one day by Colin Powell after the invasion of Iraq; therefore they are going to carry out some turmoil.

Such turmoil according to the many not to meetings held under the umbrella of the [Persian] Gulf cooperation Council, they agreed last September, 11th of last September that they are going to increase the turmoil, the wave of turmoil in Syria unless it is a pledge to carry out such an agreement.

Otherwise if they failed, they mean they are going to create a new buffer zone where, in the north of Jordan? That is difficult.

I think they are going to create it within the borders of Lebanon or beyond the borders of Turkey.

Such proposal has been carried in various steps. They are going to carry either a buffer zone or a no man’s land zone or a no fly zone or otherwise they are going to create a [haven] zone for the armed men who are gathering in the north of Syria.

Which one of such proposals they are going to carry out? In the light of Mr. Erdogan visit to Saudi Arabia where he met King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and other personalities, I think they agreed that they should increase their support to the armed people, this is when if Turkey in the light of its internal turmoil which is predicted how Mr. Erdogan is facing, this is God’s will, he is facing cancer…
