UN observers monitoring Syrian areas

The group toured the Khaldiyeh neighborhood in the central city of Homs, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported on Sunday.

Khaldiyeh has recently been the scene of clashes between Syrian government troops and armed gangs.

There are currently 15 observers in Syria to monitor the implementation of a ceasefire brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.

The peace plan, which aims to end more than a year of unrest in the country, has restored calm to most parts of Syria since it came into effect earlier this month.

However, there have been sporadic scuffles between government forces and foreign-backed armed groups in some areas.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
