‘UN monitors enter Syria massacre site’

The UN monitors arrived in al-Qubeir on Thursday after the mainstream Western media claimed a massacre has been carried out by the government forces.

Damascus denies allegations accusing mainstream media outlets of giving a false account of what really happened in the village. Government sources say the armed terrorists clashed with security forces after they were called in by villagers for help.

A statement carried on the Syrian television condemned terrorist groups for killing nine women and children in the village, which contradicts reports by Syria’s foreign-backed opposition that initially put the death toll at nearly 100.

About two weeks ago, 108 people were killed in a massacre in the town of Houla, in the volatile central province of Homs.

Damascus described the bloodshed as part of a foreign plot to aggravate the security situation in the country and persuade Western powers into a military intervention in the country.

A government investigation into the massacre also found armed groups responsible, noting that there were no traces of burns or other evidence that would confirm allegations of artillery shelling by the Syrian army.

A report issued by the United Nations said the victims were killed execution-style by close-range fire.
