UN: int’l community failed to suppress Israeli crimes

Days of Palestine, Geneva -UN Special Human Rights Rapporteur Makarim Wibisono said on Monday that international community failed to rein in Israeli human rights violations.

Wibisono severely criticised the Israeli occupation authorities for preventing him from carrying out his mission during his two years in office as human rights monitor in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Wibisono said that since he took up his post in June 2014, the Israeli occupation had not allowed him direct access to victims in parts of the occupied Palestinian territory, despite repeated requests.

He said that he sought access to the blockaded Gaza Strip four times through writing to the Israeli authorities. He also asked Israeli officials when he met them, but he received no formal response to any written requests while meetings “proved fruitless.”

“This lack of cooperation regrettably seems to signal the continuation of a situation under which Palestinians suffer daily human rights violations under the Israeli occupation.”

Wibisono said that while malicious acts of individual violence were unacceptable, the recent surge in violence was “arising in a pre-existing context.”

“Tensions have risen against a backdrop of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the blockade of Gaza, and a general lack of accountability,” he said.

He emphasised the “desperate need” for effective protection of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation, and criticised the Israeli occupation for its failures as an occupying power and the international community for offering no protection for Palestinians.

The Special Rapporteur in particular highlighted the excessive use of force by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians, demanding that the Israelis comply with international legal standards for the use of force and firearms.

Wibisono, who filed his resignation two months ago due to the Israeli violations against Palestinians while he had been unable to carry out his mission, criticised the Israeli arrest of minor Palestinian children. Wibisono resignation comes into full effect at the end of this month.
