UMNO’s Annuar Musa Blasts Mahatir Mohamad

nsnbc : The Chief of Information of Malaysia’s governing UMNO blasted former PM Mahatir Mohamad for leaving the party, speaking out against the government and for trying to serve his own agenda. Mahatir, for his part, had called for the resignation of PM Najib Razak, saying that he had caused great harm to Malaysia.

Mahathir Mohamad_Malaysia_Jan 2016Mahathir Mohamad, who long has been an outspoken critic of Prime Minister Najib Razak had among others called, among for Najib’s removal from office. In January 2016 The Malaysian Insider quoted Mahathir as saying that “Najib’s administration has caused the country’s decline in economy, politics, science, technology and knowledge. All areas are declining”. The 90-year-old Mahatir announced in late February that he was leaving UMNO.

UMNO’s Chief of Information, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, on Wednesday, responded to Mahatir’s statements and decisions, saying that Tun Dr. Mahatir Mohamad is willing to do anything, including using others, to achieve his personal agenda. Annuar noted that Mahatir is a strategist who acts upon the principle that the goal justifies the means. Somewhat neglecting the fact that members of parliament are, first of all obliged to make decisions based on their own conscience and representing the constituents instead of pulling party lines, Annuar continued the tirade saying:

“He is a strategist. We need to see a few steps ahead, including what was done recently (Mahathir’s Declaration that calls for the removal of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak). … For Dr Mahathir the end justifies the means, and he is an expert in using other people to realise his goals. … He did not like Tengku Razaleigh, or Ku Li for some reason. Imagine, Ku Li, who built the PWTC (Putra World Trade Centre), governed the party’s expenses, who was also vice-president (at the time), but Mahathir did not like his (Ku Li) way. … Because he did not want to have Ku Li, therefore, with his political acumen, the position was contested, and he directly gave his support to (Datuk Seri) Musa Hitam (now Tun) to defeat Ku Li.”

Annuar alleged that Mahatir had gotten uncomfortable with the influence Musa yielded so he began using Tun Ghafar Baba to get rid of Musa. However, after that Mahatir changed course again and gave support to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to win the post of UMNO Deputy President by sidelining Ghafar, said Annuar, who continued:

“When Anwar became politically strong, building up his own power which eventually raised more concerns, Dr Mahathir again used the same strategy and game to get rid of Anwar.”

Mahatir then once again used Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, or Pak Lah, a Penganite, by making him Deputy President and eventually the next Prime Minister, said Annuar, claiming:

“The move was made with the hope that power still remained in the hands of Dr Mahathir, until there came a point he did not like Pak Lah anymore, so Najib was used. And now, he uses (former deputy prime minister and former UMNO deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to arrange everything to ensure that his efforts to topple Najib succeeds. … In view of the failed attempt, Dr Mahathir came up with the declaration (on Friday). In fact, he is even willing to cooperate with the opposition after not being able to garner support within UMNO, including the issue of the dismissal of his son, (Datuk Seri) Mukhriz (as menteri besar of Kedah).”

Annuar alleged that Mahatir’s actions did not symbolize his struggle for the party but rather personal grudges, interests and agenda. Not pulling the party line but following own convictions is, however, no novelty for Mahatir Mohamad. Mahathir Mohamad had previously left the UMNO, on May 19, 2008, when he announced that he had lost confidence in the leadership of the then Prime Minister and UMNO president Datuk Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Dr. Mohamad returned to the UMNO on April 4, 2009, when the current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak assumed the national and party leadership.

Dr. Mohamed’s UMNO membership has long been riddled by controversy. On September 26, 1969, during the administration of Tunku Abdul Rahman, he was expelled from the party on grounds of disciplinary reasons. He returned on March 7, 1972, during the leadership of Tun Abdul Razak. Mahathir Mohamed’s announcement coincides with the UMNO Supreme Council’s suspension of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy president.

Mahathir, for his part, stressed that Najib was hell-bent holding on to power and fame. Mahathir noted that this was evident in Najib’s own admission that RM2.6 billion in political donation was used for Barisan Nasional (BN) to clinch the government in the 2013 general election. He also denied that his recent blog writings in praise of Najib’s father Tun Abdul Razak Hussein as the man he owed his political career to reflected a similar fondness for Najib.

Insiders around Mahathir have also sharply criticized Najib for his and his government’s handling of the “disappearance” of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. Most recently, the UMNO government of Prime Minister Najib Razak was blasted by the advocates of the bereft families and loved ones who perished on board the two flights. The families cried foul after Najib’s government rushed the adoption of an act through Parliament that suspended or denies the bereft existing rights in law, including access to justice mechanisms, for the benefit of Malaysian Airlines System Berhard (MAS).

No stranger to controversy, Dr. Tun Mahathir Mohamad was at the vanguard of the initiatives that led to the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal that, even though it had no legal and only moral standing, sentenced former U.S. President George W. Bush, Tony Blair and others for war crimes committed in relation to  the war against Iraq. Ever-so controversial, Mahathir Mohamad is a veteran proponent of disarmament and the abolishment of nuclear weapons. Critics of Mahathir note among others, that he has a blind spot with regard to the multi ethnic, cultural and religious fabric of Malaysia.
