‘UK’s panic petrol-buy call, Thatcherism’

In a private message to constituency associations, seen by The Telegraph, British Conservative MPs have communicated that the way British officials have advised the public to store fuel inside their homes was similar to the way Thatcher tried to put an end to the strike British miners staged in 1984 to protest the forced closure of their mines and the loss of 20,000 jobs.

“This is our Thatcher moment. In order to defeat the coming miners’ strike, she stockpiled coal. When the strike came, she weathered it, and the Labour Party, tarred by the strike, was humiliated. In order to defeat the coming fuel drivers’ strike, we want supplies of petrol stockpiled. Then, if the strike comes, we will weather it, and Labour, in hock to the Unite union, will be blamed,” read the message.

In 1984, the British government announced plans to shut down 20 coal mines, forcing 20,000 miners to lose their jobs.

In order to make any potential strike action ineffective, Thatcher, British Prime Minister at the time, had stockpiled coal and converted some power stations to burn petroleum. She also employed road haulers so that they would transport coal if railway men sympathized with striking miners.

“Thatcher mobilised every arm of the state against the striking miners and coalfield women who were defending their jobs, their children’s futures and their communities,” said Toni Bennett, an organizer of a protest against the movie “The Iron Lady.”

After Britain’s fuel tanker drivers voted for strike action on Monday, British officials pushed for increased petrol sales from panic buying.

On Wednesday, Cabinet Minister Francis Maude advised British people to store jerry cans of petrol inside their homes. Hours later, British Prime Minister David Cameron urged the public to take the “sensible precaution” and top up on petrol.

Moreover, on Thursday, British Energy Secretary Ed Davy told drivers to double the amount of petrol they bought and keep their petrol tanks two-thirds full.

On Friday, a British woman suffered 40% burns to her entire body when she caught fire while decanting petrol that she had stored in her home.

The same day, Britain’s largest union, Unite, decided to rule out industrial action over the Easter weekend to ease the panic triggered by the government’s response to the potential strike.

British MP’s comparing the panic buying of petrol to Thatcher’s tackling the miners’ strike comes as a British Pakistani political analyst, Tariq Ali, has said George Galloway’s victory in a parliamentary by-election challenges the UK politics which has been governed by Thatcherism for decades.
