UK’s Co-op Bank to face two inquiries

The first probe, planned to be carried out by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), is expected to examine the conduct of the bank and its disgraced former executive Paul Flowers.

The second inquiry, likely to be conducted by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), will also look into the failure of financial regulators and the bank’s board to monitor situation.

The second probe is expected to be ordered by British Chancellor George Osborne.

The development came days after British daily The Mail on Sunday published a video showing former Co-op Bank chief Paul Flowers buying illegal drugs, including crystal meth, crack cocaine and ketamine.

On Tuesday, West Yorkshire Police also searched the home of Flowers, who chaired the bank from 2010 until June this year, in relation to allegations that he used illegal drugs.

Moreover, on the same day, it was revealed that Flowers was forced to resign as Labour councilor in Bradford in 2011 after “inappropriate” content was found on his computer.

On Wednesday, Flowers was also suspended “indefinitely” from the Methodist Church following revelations about his use of drugs.

Meanwhile, speaking in the House of Commons, British Prime Minister David Cameron accused Labour of cover-up over Flowers, saying the party knew about the ex-bank chief’s “past”.

“This bank, driven into the wall by this chairman, has been giving soft loans to the Labour Party, facilities to the Labour Party, donations to the Labour Party, trooped in and out of Downing Street under Labour, still advising the leader of the Labour Party,” Cameron said.
