UK’s biggest union to disrupt Olympics

The leader of Unite, Len McCluskey, has warned that the London Olympics would be disrupted by strike action as Britain’s public sector servants continue to protest against the British government’s spending cuts, The Guardian reported on Tuesday.

McCluskey’s warning came as the British government announced it would exert further pressure on unions by enforcing tougher anti-strike laws. However, McCluskey maintained any unreasonable legislation on the part of the British government would be challenged by unions as they would deliberately breach the law.

Furthermore, McCluskey said that the British government’s onslaught on the public sector servants was ‘so deep and ideological’ that the Unite’s decision to target the London Olympics was quite tenable.

“The attacks that are being launched on public sector workers at the moment are so deep and ideological that the idea the world should arrive in London and have these wonderful Olympic Games as though everything is nice and rosy in the garden is unthinkable,” he said.

McCluskey said that Unite represents 28,000 bus drivers and transportation staff in London and any strike action staged by his union would definitely cripple transportation during the Olympic events, which would severely damage the image of the British capital.

Furthermore, the leader of Britain’s biggest union said he would call on British people to take on ‘all forms of civil disobedience.’
