Ukraine under growing pressure over treatment of Yulia Tymoshenko

Mrs Tymoshenko’s daughter Tymoshenko said the announcements were “the
last diplomatic warning to the regime”.

“The fact that European leaders are not visiting Ukraine and the
presidents’ summit is already the starting of action … and now it’s time
for action,” she added.

German news magazine Der Spiegel reported that Mrs Merkel, an avid football
fan, will snub Germany’s Euro matches and will encourage her ministers to
follow suit in protest at Mrs Tymoshenko’s treatment.

Mrs Merkel has yet to confirm that position publicly but Ukraine’s foreign
ministry responded with irritation.

A spokesman said he “would like to think that this is simply a newspaper
canard. I would not like to think that the statesmen of Germany are capable
of reanimating the methods of the Cold War and trying to make sport a
hostage to politics.”

Mr Barroso also said he would follow the lead of Justice Commissioner Ms
Reding, in skipping the opening ceremony of the football tournament on June
8, “unless there is a swift improvement in the human rights situation”.
