Ukraine to face catastrophe: Czech PM

Czech Republic Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka has said Ukraine will suffer a humanitarian catastrophe this winter without Russian gas.

According to Moscow-based RIA Novosti news agency, Sobotka made the comments during an interview published in Czech media on Monday.

“I find it extremely important that Russia and Ukraine agree on the renewal of gas shipments, for if it does not happen before the winter begins, we will witness a gigantic humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine,” he said.

Russia shut off gas deliveries to Ukraine on June 16 over what it says are more than $5 billion in unpaid bills. Ukraine disagrees with the amount due to differences over the price.

The Czech prime minister went on to say that the main reasons for the crisis in Ukraine was “how the Ukrainian authorities have behaved during the last 25 years, the kind of political leaders Ukraine has had, the levels of corruption and how huge the social inequality has become.”

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Moscow activists and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence pro-Russians in mid-April.

Violence intensified in May after the Donetsk and Luhansk regions held local referendums, in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

The United Nations says over 3,500 people have been killed during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
