Ukraine opposition leaders have asked Germany and the European Union to impose sanctions on President Viktor Yanukovych and other senior officials.
Opposition leaders Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Vitali Klitschko brought up the demand during a closed-door meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday.
The two called for the EU bank accounts connected to Yanukovych and his top aides to be frozen.
The opposition leaders also highlighted the need for further financial support from the European Union.
“I am very pleased with the course of the discussions and as a result I am hopeful that it will mean further support for Ukraine in solving its political problems,” Klitschko told reporters.
Meanwhile, the German chancellor told the opposition that Germany and the European Union would do everything possible to assure a “positive outcome” to the prolonged crisis in Ukraine.
Russia has said that it will give Ukraine two billion dollars in aid to support its heavily indebted economy.
The financial aid, to be provided through the purchase of Ukrainian eurobonds, will give a boost to the Ukrainian government, which is under pressure to sign an Association Agreement with the EU.
Ukraine has been rocked by anti-government protests since Yanukovych refrained from signing the agreement with the European Union in November 2013, in favor of closer ties with Russia.
Kiev has declared an amnesty for protesters arrested during 12 weeks of unrest.
The amnesty was granted after the opposition agreed to end its almost three-month occupation of the Kiev City Hall and evacuate other government buildings.
According to the decree, all charges filed against protesters between December 27, 2013 and February 2, 2014 will be dropped.
