UK unsackable Queen’s rein criticized

Nick Wall, the chair of Republic Wales, the Welsh branch of anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, predicted a strong Welsh representation in support of the biggest anti-monarchy protest “in living memory” at the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on Sunday June 3.

“I think the question you have to ask is why are we celebrating 60 years on the throne? We are essentially celebrating the reign of somebody who has not been sacked, because she cannot be sacked,” Wall said.

“This is the 21st century and to simply rely on an accident of birth to provide us with a new head of state is simply not acceptable anymore.”

As Republicans from across Britain are preparing for a historic protest against the monarchy, the chair of Republic Wales, a group formed last year in Cardiff, also predicted more people than ever to join the cause of their campaign.

“I think our message resonates more with the public now than it has ever done before and I think that is because people are generally more aspirational and not afraid to challenge a system forced upon us,” Wall added.

Earlier on April 26, 2012, anti-monarchy activists in Wales staged a protest outside the NatWest Bank in Llandaff High Street to voice their opposition to Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the city as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour to mark the 60th anniversary of her ascension to the British throne.
