UK union warns of more bus strikes

Len McCluskey warned the government that Unite will push for more bus drivers’ industrial action unless bus companies offer their workers a “fair and sensible” bonus.

His warning comes after thousands of drivers and other workers at 17 London bus companies launched a 24-hour strike on Friday over their demand for a £500 Olympic bonus.

Unite says the bonus is fair as other transport workers in London are getting similar payments for their extra work during the Olympics.

“This is a straightforward dispute about fairness, giving hard-working bus workers the same bonus for facing challenges, that have already been awarded to other transport workers, and a fraction of the bonuses being paid to Transport for London bosses,” McCluskey told the union’s national policy conference in Brighton.

“I say to Mayor Boris Johnson and the rest of the bus companies ‘Sort it out or more strikes are inevitable’,” he further warned.
