UK unemployment rises to 17 year high

The British Office for National Statistics (ONS) published on Wednesday, showed that the rate of unemployment in the country has faced its largest increase in the past 17 years, the rate was 8.4%, up from 8.3% in the preceding three-month period.

The figures also showed that the youth unemployment, amongst 16-24 year olds, has also increased sharply by 16,000 to 1.042 million, a rate of 22.5%.

The number of people who are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance also rose by 7,200 to 1.61 million in February.

The number of women out of work increased by 22,000 to 1.13 million, up from 1.06 million in the previous three-month period.

Other data issued by the ONS also revealed that public sector employment fell by 37,000 in the last quarter of 2011 to below six million, while the number of people employed in private companies increased by 45,000 to 23 million.

“Public sector employment has fallen by 270,000 in the past year following the government’s spending cuts. Local government employment fell by 33,000 in the last three months of 2011, central government by 3,000 and the civil service by 9,000,” the data also said.

UK’s Trades Union Congress (TUC) voiced its concerns over the recent figures, stressing the Tory-led government has been most female unfriendly yet. “Over a million women are now without work, with female unemployment rising by nearly a quarter in the North East over the last year,” general secretary Brendan Barber said.
