UK troops to leave Afghanistan sooner

The speed of British troops going out of Afghanistan could increase next year as Afghan forces are able to take control of security issues and the fight against Taliban.

Hammond said British commanders were surprised by the extent to which Afghan forces were able to take the lead in security.

Nevertheless, NATO forces’ disrespect for Afghan people’s religious beliefs has raised anti-Western sentiment among people in the Asian country.

On September 9, Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) reported that a total of 427 British forces personnel or MOD civilians have died while serving in Afghanistan since the start of the US-led invasion in October 2001.

Earlier this year, a rocket-propelled grenade landed just outside the front gate of a house used by British diplomats in Kabul. Two rockets also hit a British embassy guard tower in Kabul in April, 2012.

Hammond’s call for an early withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan comes as Prince Harry, Britain’s third in line to the throne, has started a combat tour for the British military as an Apache attack helicopter pilot in Afghanistan amid Taliban’s warning of catching him dead or alive.
