The police set up a 200m cordon around a house in Cheltenham and evacuated all nearby houses on Friday after on operation in which officers found suspicious explosive devices in the house’s garage.
Two men were arrested in the operation and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were dispatched to make the place safe.
Gloucestershire Police said the bomb disposal experts have not yet managed to defuse the explosives and the cordon will remain in place until further notice.
“This is a painstaking and methodical process in which everyone’s safety is absolutely paramount. For this reason the specialist searches that are being carried out cannot be rushed,” Assistant Chief Constable Richard Berry said.
“Unfortunately this means that we are now almost certain we won’t be able to clear the cordon this evening[on Friday] to allow people back into their homes,” he added.
The incident comes only a day after a house was destroyed in a gas explosion in Cheltenham.
The police have dismissed any links between the ongoing incident and the blast.
