UK teachers threaten to strike in autumn

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), which represent 85% of teachers in England and Wales, signed a “joint declaration of intent” and announced a “historic agreement” that threatens coordinated autumn strikes unless the Tory-led government stops its acts “undermining” the country’s education system.

“Should the government refuse to take the current opportunity to negotiate sensible arrangements which protect teachers and defend education, then it is our intention to move to escalate industrial action, including jointly coordinated strike action and action short of strike action in the autumn,” said a joint statement.

Criticizing the Coalition’s “onslaught of attacks and threats to pay, pensions and working conditions,” NUT general secretary Christine Blower urged the British Education Secretary Michael Gove “to come and talk to us about the range of issues which are now in play for teachers all over the place.”

“Since the Government came into office, there has been a relentless and unprecedented assault on teachers’ pay and conditions of service,” NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates added.
