UK student gets 7 term-ban for protest

Owen Holland, student of English Literature was banned from the university until the end of 2014 after he read out a poem at the same time the minister was giving speech.

“You are a man who believes in the market and in the power of competition to drive up quality. But look to the world around you: your gods have failed,” the poem included.

The minister was then forced to give up his speech on the “Idea of a University” last November, as the students protesting against the presence of the minister at the university were repeating back the lines of the poem read by Holland.

Holland was found guilty of “recklessly or intentionally impeding free speech within the Precincts of the University.” And the university’s Court of Discipline ruled that Holland could not attend the university for two-and-a-half years as he participated in the “epistle to David Willetts” not allowing the minister to deliver his speech completely.

However, over 60 academics and students signed “Spartacus” letter to the university officials confirming their role in the same protest and asked for the “same charge be brought against each of us.”

Dr Primavadya Gopal, who also signed the letter, expressed his concerns over the University Court’s bizarre decision to hand down a harsh punishment to a single student, which was even stronger than what the university’s own prosecutors had demanded.

“As the ‘Spartacus letter’ indicates, many students and fellows took part in the action that the student is being singled out for. This is in no sense a fair application of justice, and students and academics expect better from Cambridge,” Gopal added.

Rees Arnott-Davies, a student who was among the protesters, condemned the ruling as “the height of hypocrisy.” Saying, “This is out of all proportion. Two and a half years for an entirely legal and peaceful protest is an absolute travesty and makes me ashamed to study at this university.”
