‘UK spending cuts risking nukes safety’

“[There is] a lack of adequate resource to deliver the defense nuclear programs safely,” MoD’s head of nuclear safety, Commodore David Langbridge warned.

Langbridge added securing the 220 nuclear warheads and the ten nuclear-powered submarines the MoD operates is becoming increasingly problematic and need “significant action” to tackle.

Langbridge’s warning comes as the MoD is to add another reactor-propelled submarine by the end of the year along with five more by 2024.

His report for 2011 comes after the 2010 report that warned of “progressively worse” risks of accidents and radiation leaks from nuclear warheads and boasts.

In his report Langbridge codified lack of finance and staff as red that means they might need significant action “within a year.”

“Inadequacy of resources, both money and staff complement, and the difficulties in maintaining a sustainable cadre of suitably competent staff (Royal Navy, MoD civilians and in industry partners) are the principal threats to safety in the defense nuclear programme in the medium term,” he warned.

He further warned that the Navy is facing serious difficulties regarding submarine reactor engineers as the current plans to address the problem are not adequate and the armed forces planned 25 percent staff cuts by 2015 would not be helpful either.

“[The problem areas] pose the risk that it will become increasingly difficult to maintain that the defence nuclear programs are being managed with due regard for the protection of the workforce, the public and the environment,” he added.
