A military court on Friday found Sergeant Alexander Blackman guilty of murdering an injured Afghan prisoner in cold blood while on duty in the country’s southern province of Helmand in September 2011.
A video footage of the execution, which was recorded inadvertently by a helmet-mounted camera, shows the British serviceman shooting a wounded Taliban militant in the chest at close range with a pistol.
“You have betrayed your corps and all British service personnel who have served in Afghanistan,” Judge Advocate General Jeff Blackett told Blackman during the trial.
Two other marines, charged with involvement in the murder, were acquitted by the court martial board in Bulford, Wiltshire, in southwest England.
The three soldiers were tried anonymously, but judges at the High Court in London ruled on Thursday that 39-year-old Blackman could be identified.
The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism. The invasion removed the Taliban from power, but Afghanistan remains insecure despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led forces there.
The prolonged war, which has caused record-high civilian and military casualties, has become the longest military conflict in US history.
