UK slams union’s Olympic strike threats

Speaking to the Guardian on Tuesday, Britain’s biggest union leader, Len McCluskey, warned that the London Olympics would be disrupted by strike action because the UK government’s attacks on the public sector servants are “so deep and ideological”.

Responding to the union leader’s warnings of strikes, which are expected to damage the image of the British capital during the Olympic events, the British Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman denounced threats as “completely unacceptable and unpatriotic”.

Labour leader Ed Miliband also slammed talk of strike action during the Games, saying in a tweet, “Any threat to the Olympics is totally unacceptable and wrong. This is a celebration for the whole country and must not be disrupted.”

Furthermore, the UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg slammed the move, adding, “I just think people will be gobsmacked, appalled, that someone thinks that at a time when we are finally hosting one of the greatest events in the world, he is calling for civil disobedience.”

Meanwhile, The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union threatened strike action after rejecting a reward package of £500 to work during the Olympics.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow regarded the British government’s offer as “a bribe not to strike”, saying that the deal had too many strings attached.
