UK pushes to secure ties with Bahrain

As the ruling Al Khalifa regime in Bahrain, armed to the teeth by the British government, continues to suppress protesters, a round-table entitled ‘External Factors Influencing British-Bahraini Relations: prospects for trans-regional cooperation’ gets underway in the Bahraini capital, Manama.

The round-table is mainly focused on the Bahraini regime’s cooperation with Britain’s Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) as the British defense and security think tank, hailed by the British queen for its ‘valuable work,’ will advise the Al Khalifa regime.

The round-table comes as the Bahraini regime forces, using British military equipment and supervised by former Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner, John Yates, brutally cracked down on protesters on the anniversary of the Bahraini people’s revolution.

British-made teargas and stun grenades and Britain’s £1 million worth of arms sales to the Al Khalifa regime are to be complemented by the advice by the RUSI.

During the round-table, the Bahraini king Hamad Al Khalifa’s adviser for diplomatic affairs, Mohammed Abdul Ghaffar, also referred to the UK’s role in the establishment of the Al Khalifa regime.

In 1820, Britain signed a treaty with the Al Khalifa dynasty and announced the Khalifas as the rulers of Bahrain. Further treaties were concluded in 1861 and all treaties formed the Perpetual Truce of Peace and Friendship.

According to the treaties, the Al Khalifa regime could only dispose of the land to the UK and could not establish relationship with any country without first seeking the approval of Britain in return for Britain’s protecting the regime.

Britain’s commitment to the protection of the Al Khalifa regime becomes more significant as the majority Shiite population have voiced their anger at the regime while the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry revealed that the Khalifas systematically tortured protesters and committed human rights violations.
