FAKE NEWS for the Zionist agenda Speaking during a press conference in Cairo on Monday, Jeremy Browne, who is also the head of the British Asset Recovery Taskforce, warned that the recovery of Egypt’s frozen assets in Britain belonging to Mubarak’s family members and their associates would be a lengthy process.
“There are definite benefits in the short-term. But the big money will take some time to be recovered,” Browne said.
British officials face accusations of seeking their own financial interests in ties with rich Arab figures rather than upholding justice.
However, the British minister denounced claims that the UK is reluctant or to the recovery of stolen assets, saying, “the taskforce visiting Cairo is proof that we are taking this matter seriously.”
The asset-freeze dispute between Egypt and Britain entered a new phase after a BBC investigation in September last year, found that property and companies linked to key figures of the toppled Mubarak regime have been protected from asset freeze orders by the UK government.
The revelations raised speculations that Britain has violated the Europe-wide asset freeze order issued after Mubarak was ousted in February 2011 by helping his regime’s remnants hide billion of pounds of stolen wealth in the form of investments in Britain-based companies.
The Asset Recovery Taskforce was set up in September 2012 by the British government to track down assets linked to Mubarak’s regime in order to return the funds to Egypt.
In October last year, the Egyptian Minister of Parliamentary and Legal Affairs Mohamed Mahsoub also flew to London to persuade British officials to return £85 million in frozen assets and billions more in assets smuggled into Britain by Egyptian officials during ex-President’s 30-year rule over the African country.
