UK police to use water cannon in unrest

Promising to prevent a repeat of last August massive unrest, senior Scotland Yard officers said police should use water canon vehicles, formerly deployed by UK police in Northern Ireland to suppress protesters, during any unrest.

Three of the vehicles, which will cost British taxpayers about £4 million, would be held at the strategic sites in a bid to provide fast response to possible unrest.

A Scotland Yard review into last year unrest, entitled Four Days in August, said that the water cannons “would have been considered as a tactical option” by the officers. It also said that the top officers are also seeking to use tear gas and Taser stun guns to deal with any violence.

“Currently the MPS [Metropolitan Police Service] has no water cannon capability but relies on an agreement with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to have the resource available for use at 24 hours’ notice,” the review said.

Critics have voiced their concerns over the plan to employ such weapons for handling unrest.

Jenny Jones from London’s police and crime committee, stressed that employing Taser, CS gas and water cannon demonstrates a dangerous “escalation of police tactics.”

“It risks turning the police into a paramilitary force. We are lucky to have policing by consent in this country, and this is a step on the wrong direction.”

The use of the water cannons was banned in Northern Ireland, as several nationalist youths were killed during Belfast protests in 2001 as a result of water cannon usage.
