Senior Scotland Yard officers apparently sold the information on the fraud case to a detective agency employed by the fraudster James Ibori, who is a Nigerian politician convicted of a £150 million scam.
Two detective constables at the Metropolitan police and a former detective inspector of the force are now accused of getting up to £20,000 in bribes in exchange for highly sensitive information.
The revelations were made by a lawyer, Mike Schwarz, during a parliamentary hearing into the works of private investigators.
“The records show about half a dozen payments totaling about £20,000 over a period of eight or nine months… it appears to be inappropriate if not corrupt,” Schwarz said.
He added one of the invoices includes a £5,000 bill for revealing “forthcoming interview strategy to [be] deployed by police” in the fraud case.
The Scotland Yard has said it is investigating the bribery case.
