Howe said Cameron’s plan to renegotiate the UK’s terms of membership with the European Union (EU) has opened “Pandora’s box politically”.
Howe wrote in the Observer newspaper that the Prime Minister’s actions turned his party’s problems into a national one and is endangering Britain’s future with Europe.
Howe’s comments come after Cameron’s colleagues were forced to deny that a close ally of the Prime Minister described grassroots Tory activists as “swivel-eyed loons” which led to a backbench crisis in the party this week.
Meanwhile, over 100 Tory MPs rebelled against Cameron as they expressed regret at the absence of an EU referendum during the Queen’s Speech.
As a result of the intervention of US President Barack Obama advising Britain to remain in Europe, Howe pitied the UK government, saying “The Conservative party now needs a US president to tell it what it once had the confidence to proclaim as common sense itself.”
Cameron has come under pressure by the split opinions of Europe among his fellow Tories. He had already been strained in January against his declared will, to promise an in/out referendum before 2017.
