UK PM slams Labour and Lib Dems on EU

Speaking ahead of the Commons vote on the EU, Cameron asked both leaders to explain whether they are prepared to offer the public a vote on the country’s membership in the EU.

Cameron criticized Clegg and Miliband for being skeptical of the need for a referendum and said the party leaders were “pretending nothing has changed” in the arguments over Europe.

The British PM noted that the 27-nation bloc had hugely changed over recent years, mainly because of the eurozone crisis.

“You can make your response sticking your head in the sand and pretending nothing has changed and just carrying on and accepting everything that comes out of Brussels,” Cameron said.

Britain’s ruling Conservatives published a draft bill to legislate for a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU by 2017.

The Conservatives will ask the British people in a referendum before the end of 2017, “Do you think that the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union?”

However, Tories’ coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats said they would oppose the Bill, telling the Guardian that the Tories were “free to bang on about Europe”, but that the issue was “an internal Tory trauma”.
