UK PM rants about Iran’s nuclear bid

The UK premier, who was speaking to British MPs on the Commons liaison committee after a cabinet briefing on Tuesday, also claimed that Tehran’s ambitions were dangerous for the Middle East, expressing fears that Britain’s security would be on the line under such circumstances.

The hostile remarks by the British premier comes as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei reiterated last month in a major speech that Iran has never sought and will never seek nuclear weapons and considers the possession of such arms as a great sin, useless and destructive.

Furthermore, Iran has repeatedly called for a worldwide elimination of all nuclear weaponry, charging that despite existing disarmament treaties and conventions, global nuclear powers, including Britain, continue to maintain and develop a variety of atomic armaments.

Cameron also alleged that Iran “is a danger more broadly, not least because there are signs that the Iranians want to have some sort of inter-continental missile capability.

“We have to be clear this is a threat potentially much wider than just Israel and the region,” he asserted.

Despite the widely publicized claims by the US, Israel and some of their European allies that Iran’s nuclear energy program may include a military diversion, Iran steadfastly insists on its civilian nature, arguing that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities, but has never cite any verifiable evidence of diversion in the country’s civilian nuclear energy program.
