UK PM alerted on ‘hasty’ Afghan pullout

As Cameron on Wednesday visited troops in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, a high-ranking military source warned the British prime minister that Britain needs to uphold a strong presence in the country for two more years so that ‘Afghanistan remains a viable country.’

“If the prime minister’s aims don’t change – and that is to maintain a viable state with ANSF [Afghan National Security Forces] that can protect its borders and counter-terrorism – then we need to maintain a strong presence. We are planning a glide down path,” the senior military source said.

The warning comes as a report of an escalation of withdrawals next year has alarmed British military commanders who are of the opinion that it would risk hard-won gains.

The report which appeared in The Sun newspaper this week, says that Britain’s ministers, among them Finance Minister George Osborne, are in favor of a faster troops pullout.

According to the daily, the British ministers believe that it would save Britain 3 billion pounds if the withdrawal of all its troops was completed by 2013, rather than by 2014.

“There is not going to be an immediate withdrawal, nor is there going to be a cliff edge in 2014. What this is is a process,” Cameron said in response to the British military’s worries.

The prime minister confirmed that the government will, in December, announce the number of troops planned to be withdrawn next year.

British ministers have so far decided to withdraw 500 troops this year which leaves 9,000 remaining in Afghanistan.

With roughly 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, Britain is the second-largest contributor to NATO’s US-led 130,000-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), due to withdraw from the country by the end of 2014.

British ‘concern’ for security in Afghanistan is voiced as the rising death toll for the US-led forces has increased anger in the US and other countries contributing to the prolonged war in Afghanistan.

The 2001-present US-led war in Afghanistan, which has caused record-high civilian and military casualties, has become the longest military conflict in American history.

Washington invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of combating terrorism.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of thousands of US-led forces in the country.
