UK petrol panic takes its first victim

The woman, in her 40s, suffered 40 percent burns to her whole body while transferring the petrol she had stored in her kitchen between containers.

The incident comes just days after the British government urged the public to store petrol in their homes fearing disruption caused by a potential strike action planned by Britain’s fuel tanker drivers.

On Wednesday, Cabinet Minister Francis Maude urged British people to store jerry cans of petrol inside their homes.

Furthermore, just hours after Maude advised drivers to fill up any spare jerry cans with petrol, British Prime Minister David Cameron urged the public to take the “sensible precaution” and top up on petrol.

Moreover, on Thursday, British Energy Secretary Ed Davy advised drivers to double the amount of petrol they bought and keep their petrol tanks two-thirds full.

The Fire Brigades’ Union (FBU) criticized the government’s decision to advise people to store petrol inside their homes saying such advice would “massively increase” fire and explosion risks.

“Those without garages may be tempted to store fuel in the home. In the event of a fire in the house or a neighboring property, it would be disastrous,” said Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary.

Furthermore, it was revealed that increased sales of fuel from panic buying would bring in more than £32 million in extra fuel excise duty for the British government.

Despite the British government’s push for increased petrol sales, fire officers have once again warned the public not to store petrol after petrol panic took its first victim.
