UK nuke victims to make redress plea

Survivors of the atomic bomb tests, carried out in the South Pacific, and their families will march on Downing Street this week, asking for compensation over their suffering and loss.

Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock said he will join the demonstration, adding that, “They [the victims] were neither adequately protected nor properly made aware of the dangers”.

“Our country, and our Government, has a moral duty to recognize the hazards endured by these men,” he said.

Thousands of men, many of them on National Service, were ordered in the 1950s to witness repeated nuclear tests in the South Pacific as British scientists tried to build atomic and hydrogen bombs.

According to British media reports, veterans of the blasts have increased rates of cancer and rare diseases, with their children showing to have six times the normal rate of leukemia and unusual skin conditions and ten times the normal rate of birth defects.

According to reports, the men were only instructed to put their hands over their eyes for protection while watching the explosions.

A succession of Conservative and Labour governments, however, denied they were irradiated during the tests.

Cameron has been repeatedly attacked for ignoring the terms of the Military Covenant, which pledges to protect British servicemen.
